When Eluma is closed, why is the Eluma icon still in the Windows System Tray?

The system tray icon indicates that, while the Eluma Desktop window may be closed, the Eluma application is still running in the background. This allows Eluma to keep certain features running such as the browser toolbar, displaying alerts and retrieving subscribed RSS feeds will the application is closed. To completely exit all the pieces of the Eluma application, right-click the Eluma icon and choose the ‘Exit’ option. To re-open the application, choose ‘Show Desktop.’

What do the different fonts and icons for folders in Folders mean?

For RSS feeds, if the title is in bold, it means that "keep history" is turned on. When you Publish a folder in the Personal Collections area, Eluma changes the way that folder appears in your Personal Collections area.

  • Before you Publish the folder, the folder name appears in regular text.
  • Once you Publish the folder, the folder icon changes to a folder with a hand under it, and the folder name appears in italic font.
  • If you make changes to the folder in your Personal Collections area (like adding a new item to it, for example), the published version does not automatically include those changes until you manually Republish the folder. The folder name will appears in a bold, non-italic font, with an asterisk after the name, to alert you that you need to Republish the folder in order for those changes to be reflected in the published version, until you Republish the folder. Once you republish, the folder name reverts to a non-bold, italic font and the asterisk is removed, to let you know that the Published folder is up-to-date.

Why is the system tray icon blinking?

When you receive an alert, the system tray icon will blink to let you know an alert has been received. You can change your alert behaviors in the Eluma settings.

Why can’t I add or delete items from a collection which I'm watching?

Collection creators are the only ones who can edit the content provided within a collection. Any changes they make and publish are automatically reflected in your subscription. To make your own changes, you may copy the collection or pieces of the collection to your Personal Collections and make any changes you want.

What features are accessible if I choose to Register and Login?

The following features require you to be registered and logged in:

  • Eluma Anywhere – when you are logged in, Eluma will automatically synchronize your collections and subscriptions across all computers on which you have Eluma installed.
  • Posting a comment
  • Watching to an invitation-only collection
  • Publishing a collection

How do I turn the Eluma toolbar on or off?

The Eluma toolbar is installed with when you download the application and may be turned on by opening Internet Explorer, choosing the Tools menu, Toolbars, and selecting the Eluma toolbar. In Firefox, choose the View menu, Toolbars and selecting the Eluma toolbar.

Can I install a different version of Eluma from another company or brand?

No. Multiple versions on one computer are not supported at this time. Please un-install the current version first if you wish to install a version from another company or brand. If you had previously registered and logged in, your collections will be retrieved once you log in to the new install.

If I reinstall, will I lose my collections?

Not if you are registered and logged in. Once you log in, a copy of all your collections are placed on Eluma servers so they can be synchronized across different PCs on which you have installed Eluma. So, if you reinstall Eluma on one of your computers, when you log back in, all your collections will be retrieved.

Can I drag-and-drop from my browser into Eluma to collect?

You can drag bookmarks from your browser into Eluma by clicking on the favico in your browser and dragging it into the Folders area. Eluma auto-populates the name and description and puts it in the spot to which you drag it. If you are using Microsoft Vista and Internet Explorer, when you drag-and-drop like this, the Vista security system kicks in. A check box will appear asking if you wish to allow the content to be copied. Click the check box and everything will work fine.

I copied a collection from Watched Collections to Folders. How come I'm not getting any updates to it?

When you copy a collection from Watched Collections to Folders, you are making a complete copy of it for yourself, and that copy is no longer tied to the published version on the Eluma servers. So, you no longer get updates on that copy. However, you can now use the copy as the basis for a new collection of your own. Keep things you like. Get rid of things you don't. Add new items. Publish your modified collection so others can benefit from your changes.

I logged out. How come all my old "anonymous" stuff is back?

The "anonymous" user is similar to all other users, except for the few features that require logging in. So Eluma stores all the bookmarks the "anonymous" user collected while Eluma was used by "anonymous". However, these bookmarks are only stored locally on your machine. They are not uploaded to Eluma servers via the Eluma Anywhere feature and cannot be synchronized to other machines unless they are transferred to a registered user at the time of log in.

Can I configure auto-updates for a specific time or date?

Eluma checks for updates every 12 hours. You may right–click the Eluma system tray icon and choose ‘Check for updates’ at any time.

In an RSS feed, why does Eluma say there are 4 new unread items when I think there are only 3 new ones?

Sometimes RSS publishers make edits to older feed items. So, even if you mark the item as read, Eluma will show you the edited item as if it were new.

I installed Firefox after I installed Eluma. How do I install the Eluma Firefox toolbar?

Run the Eluma install as you would when an auto-update occurs. The Eluma installer will let you select/deselect the toolbars you want to install and update your installation. You do not need to uninstall first.

What is the media pane?

The media pane is a place to display the contents of a URL while you are viewing a collection. Collection owners can use this space to highlight special content. You can also use the media pane to show your own content while you’re using your own collections.

Why is “publish folder” grayed out on my folder?

Only top level folders in Folders can be published as a collection. On any sub-folders, the “publish folder” option is grayed out.

Why can’t I send a personal folder to a friend?

Eluma’s “send to a friend” feature only works on items that are in public collections. When you send an Eluma item to your friend, they receive a link to view the item in a Web browser or as a preview inside Eluma. Because your personal folders are private, there is no link to your items. If you wish to share a personal folder, you must first publish it. When you publish, you can also choose to make that collection invitation-only.

When I double click on a bookmark in Eluma why do I get a dialog box that says "can not open url" with an "OK" button, but then the URL opens in my default browser?

This happens when your computer is confused over what your default browser is. Its likely that you have both IE and Firefox installed and your computer is confused over which one is the default, you may be experiencing other artifacts of this as well. Whichever browser you think is your default browser, change the OTHER to be your default, then change back. This will reset the parameter in your registry and you will be all set.

I don't have IE6 installed, but I do have Firefox. Why won't Eluma install?

Even if you don't use Internet Explorer as your default browser, the Eluma Desktop uses the IE6 engine to render HTML in parts of the product, for example, the content pane. So, you must have IE6 installed to use Eluma, even if you only plan on using Firefox or some other browser as your default browser.

Can I put widgets in Eluma?

You can add Web widgets to the description of any object in Eluma. Any HTML object or Flash Web widget that can be installed and executed within an HTML-based web page should work. For example, you can embed a YouTube video, a TypePad or WidgetBox widget into one of your descriptions. For security reasons, scripting (JavaScript, VBscript, PHP, etc.) is turned off in the description, so widgets that includea SCRIPT tag will not work.

As an example, to insert a YouTube video in a description.

  • Navigate to the YouTube video in your Web browser.
  • In the section called “about this video”, select the code from the “embed” box and copy it to your clipboard.
  • In the properties dialog for the item, select the “edit html source” option in the description editor and paste the code into the html editor dialog box. You do not need to put any <html> or <body> tags around the code you pasted. Alternatively, rather you can right-click in the description box and choose "paste as HTML."

Depending on the code you pasted, when you save the HTML, the embedded code may not preview completely until you entirely close and save the properties dialog. Below are two screen shots that show an example of embedding a YouTube video into a bookmark description.

How come I see a "Locate Link Browser" dialog box when I receive an Eluma invitation?

This is related to a known bug in Microsoft Outlook 2003 when either Netscape or Firefox is your default browser. Under certain conditions (see Microsoft support base article),you will see the "Locate Link Browser" dialog box displayed when you click on an Eluma invitation link. Just click cancel on the dialog box and everything else should work normally. To see more information on the Microsoft bug, click: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821692. A screen shot of the dialog box is below.
